Light
…and darkness.
When I get an idea for The Family Table Devotions, I usually have a bible verse in mind. I had some thoughts about light, and some bible verses to look at. I typed “light” into the search bar of the bible app, and for some reason “darkness” popped in there too. That “light darkness” search returned 56 results.
I was quite taken aback that the book of Job had 11 instances of “light darkness”. That added a new dimension to Job’s trials, at least for me… As God’s asks Job, “How can someone get to the dwelling of light? Where is the place for darkness? (Job 38:19 EHV) I tend to ask this question myself about this time of year. Daylight becomes rare, the darkness of the night increasing. The introspection, the soul searching spiritual inventory, the doubt, the return to trust.
The bible verse that I initially thought of was, “When Jesus spoke to them again, he said, “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 EHV) However, I think I now like what Job has to say about Jesus, “He uncovers deep mysteries that were hidden in darkness. He brings the shadow of death into the light.” (Job 12:22 EHV)
When you struggle with the darkness, either the literal darkness or a spiritual darkness, remember the one who separated the light and darkness, the light shining into the darkness (Genesis 1, John 1) your Savior Jesus.
