Jesus and the Super Bowl Ads

I hope I don’t get dinged for copyright infringement for using the above “s” word…

Have you followed the “He Gets Us” hoopla over the “big game” commercials? How about the Scientology commercial? At a purported seven million dollars per thirty second spot, will we say with Judas, “Why wasn’t this… given to the poor?” [John 12:5] Or will we heed Jesus’ words to John:

John said, “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he is not following you along with us.”

But Jesus said to him, “Do not try to stop him, because whoever is not against you is for you.”

Parenthetically, that exchange between John and Jesus came in response to this:

An argument started among them about which of them would be the greatest. Since Jesus knew the thoughts of their hearts, he took a little child and had him stand next to him. Then he said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. And whoever receives me receives him who sent me. In fact, the one who is least among all of you is the one who is great.”

Which is in line with the “Be Childlike” video from He Gets Us.

Where was Jesus on Super Bowl Sunday? Was he in the Scientology commercial? Was he in the He Gets Us commercials? Was he in the E-Trade babies commercial? How you answer those questions says more about you than about Jesus. Jesus has told us where he would be. Matthew 18 and the just quoted Luke 9:46 are the same account from two different observers. Jesus says in verse 20:

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Jesus was in Church Sunday. We gathered in his name, heard his proclamation of forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation; witnessed and participated in his Sacraments. In fact, this past Sunday, through Baptism, a mother and daughter were brought into his kingdom — just as he promised!
