An Ascension Meditation
Forty days after Easter is Ascension day: that will be Thursday. St Luke records this in his Gospel and in the first chapter of Acts. I have made several allusions to different Bible passages about people looking. Look and see if you remember the references. I have intentionally omitted Matthew 24:23. Believe me, I have a reason!
He has ascended!
Look
I look inward Wrong direction
We stand, look to the sky
Wrong direction
I see only the cloud
I look this way and that
Wrong direction
Saw no one
Hid in the sand
Sages look to a star
A king demands to look also
Wrong direction
There will be return
I did not look for you
Hungry, thirsty, sick, a stranger
You are there
But I am always looking in the Wrong direction
I have heard the Words
Soon you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power
and coming on the clouds of heaven.
The two in white clothes say the same
Here I walk in faith
At home I will look and see
As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives,
and that at the end of time he will stand over the dust.
Then, even after my skin has been destroyed,
nevertheless, in my own flesh I will see God.
I myself will see him.
My own eyes will see him, and not as a stranger.
And He will come again!
