The Water
Pastor Dan’s recent Family Table Devotion “The Fire” was published just before the impetus of this piece: The Water. I am not throwing down the gauntlet here, however there seems to be a series in the making with the two remaining elements: The Air and The Earth. We may have to flip a coin to see which gets Aristotle’s quintessential element…
I will spare you most of the mundane details, suffice it to say, a sump pump failed and the Hope staff and a cadre of volunteers spent the better part of two days mopping up water. I am not sure what was running through Pastor Dan’s mind, however, as late as noon Saturday, I was mentally preparing for a COVID era online only Sunday Divine service. I praise the LORD we did not have to go that route. I am not a fan of online services — that’s a discussion for another time and another place. I had little time to reflect on the water that I was wringing into a bucket, now is the time I can.
From Genesis, where the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters, to Revelation where the waters of life flow from the throne of the Lamb (Rev 22) there is plenty of water to soak up throughout the bible. Water brings life. Water brings death and destruction. I spent two days looking at the potential of water destruction. It is time to look and remember the water that brings life.
For many of us, the first words we ever heard from God was, “I baptize you.” Through that water we are brought into God’s kingdom as his child. Others of us believe the water that Jesus gives (John 4) poured out with blood from his pierced side (John 19:34) brings us into the Body of Christ. By whatever means the Holy Spirit delivers faith, we hear:
Jesus stood up and called out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! As the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from deep within the person who believes in me.”

Streams of water will flow? I wonder if Jesus is talking about a broken sump pump? Anyone else have a mop and a bucket?
