Observe

Dan Howard   -

Last week we started a look at James 5:7-11

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

Last week we talked about patience, today we are talking about observing the season. Perhaps the most famous verse in the Bible about the seasons is Ecclesiastes 3:1 – For everything these is a season. Jesus echoes this in Matthew 24:32 when he warns the people just as the seasons change and we know that through observation, the cross too should stand out to us. So what do we need to take away from all of this as Christians?

First,  that God is in control. The sun rose. The seasons change…that is God’s will.
Daniel writes in Chapter 2 verse 21

He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

All that we experience happens in a system of laws and seasons that God ordains…He orders.

The second thing we should realize is how much you mean to God.
The reason we have celebrate lent is to remember that God let this world continue. From the moment He allowed Adam and Eve sinned in Genesis chapter 3, He spoke of a coming messiah who would redeem His creation. He didn’t have to redeem. He chose to.
Sin entered into the world and creation suffered – Romans 8:19-23
Yet God said a time, a season is coming – Philippians 3:13-14

So as you go through this week, I have to ask you what are you going to observe?
The sin in this world?
Or the God who has delivered you from sin, death and the devil.

See you Sunday,
