A Distinct Voice
Did you ever stop and think about how distinctive a voice is?
I saw a article the other day on the 20 most distinctive singers of all time. These voices are unmistakable: Bob Dylan, Shakira, Janis Joplin, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Billy Corgan.
And, let’s not forget about the voices you know by heart. Your mom and dad, your spouse. This last week there was a fuss in the back of the church during lunch. I instantly recognized my sons voice over the crowd.
Jesus draws on the power of a distinctive voice on John 10:22-30.
22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me,[a] is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”
Jesus does it by relating to something the people would recognize the work of a shepherd.
To the people it would look like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e45dVgWgV64
Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He has a unique voice that rises above the world and calls to his sheep. Today I just want to encourage you to listen. The Good shepherd calls to you. Every minute of every day. You hear him in the Word; Bible study and prayer. Don’t forget to take the time to listen today.
Today is a short one. It’s been a busy week. Next week I will be taking a week off. I hope this summer you find time to rest and relax as well my friends, and I look forward to doing ministry with you!
God bless,
- Pastor Dan
