Dan Howard   -

As I am writing this it is 11pm on Wednesday night. The bulk of the storm has passed. What was supposed to be a dozen or more inches of snow doesn’t seem to be coming to pass. We had much more rain than we thought we were going to get and a lot less snow than we expected. But what we do have, well, that is some very heavy snow to move. As I reflect on the storm I don’t envy the weatherman’s job. Call for too little snow and people get angry that their lives are disrupted and they are unprepared. Call for too much and you are the butt of every joke made for several days.  Yet what are the odds that you will be exactly right. Especially here in Michigan!

If we are honest we treat our sin the same way. When we speak about sin against us we often call for much more than we actually received. When we speak about our sin against others we often call for much less than what actually occurred.  What does that lead us to?

This

“Jesus I have a little sin I need you to take care of….
I’m not that bad….but I’m glad you are helping me. “

Or perhaps you are the other side

“Jesus I have too much sin for you to ever take care off.
I’m too bad…you can’t help me….”

So I want to take the time to remind you of two theological truths:

  1. If you think you only have a little sin you will only ever need a little savior.
  2. In Christ’s atoning death you have been given all the grace you will ever need.

These can be hard truths to accept. As Paul writes in Romans,” All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God”, and “the wages of sin is death”. And yet Paul also reminds the Ephesians that “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”

And so today, as you read this, I encourage you to reflect upon the Law…and truly acknowledge your sin.
After words, reflect upon the Gospel for you are fully loved by a God who not only calls you as you are, but loves you too much to leave you the way you are.

Enjoy the snow.
Repent of your sin
Thank your savior.
Share your faith.
