Compass
The compass is an important piece of equipment. In fact, an argument can be made it is one of the most important inventions in history. It allowed brave explorers to set out and explore assured they are traveling in the proper direction. It allowed people to map where they had been and know which direction they were going. It looks simple, but what it does is vital. I was recently watching one of my favorite movies: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. In that movie one of the main protagonists, a certain Jack Sparrow…. excuse me, CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow is being arrested and ridiculed for the equipment he carried. Amongst those items was a compass that didn’t point North. It made him look silly and foolish. Certainly, that compass was a broken piece of junk! It was not until later we discovered that the compass does not lead North but instead it leads to what your heart wants most! Wouldn’t that be a great thing to have? Wouldn’t it be great if we had something to guide us through life?
We do have that compass. Look with me at 2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
We have been given the Scripture, the Holy Bible, the very Words of God. We know that the Bible is profitable…beneficial…. for many things.
Reproof – to express disapproval
Correction – to guide on properly
Training – to teach and enforce a behavior.
All that your life may be complete. I don’t know of anyone who wakes up and says “Man, I wish my life would lose something,” or perhaps “Man, I am so glad my life seems incomplete.” Most people I talk to are upset when they feel they are missing something. As Christians we do have that Compass that directs us where to go! Do you turn to it? How often do you check your bearings? God has laid out a course for you.
Psalm 23:2-3 “He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
And to walk that course he has given you the Holy Spirit…and its blessings….
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Fall is almost upon us, my friends. Busy days, and the routines of life. Is daily devotion a part of that routine? How about regular church and Bible study? Did you know both are available on our website? (http://www.hopelutheranwarren.com/) My challenge to you is to pull out the Scripture this week and look around. Get your bearings, and follow the course charted for you by our Savior.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11
