Search for Joy

Steve Skiver   -

I am writing for this very purpose: I am confident about all of you—that what gives me joy is what gives joy to all of you

The above quote from St Paul was edited a bit, and yes, I am taking some liberties by snatching the quote out of context. Paul was explaining to the church at Corinth his change in plans for making a visit to them. My purpose, by taking some liberties, is to look at — and search for — joy.

Paul makes the assumption that what gives him joy is the same joy of the body of believers at Corinth. He says, “We are working together with you for your joy. For you stand firm by faith.” (1 Cor. 1:24 EHV) Paul always and in everything seemed to have joy.

I am overflowing with joy in all our trouble.

In fact, when we came to Macedonia, our flesh had no relief. Instead, we were troubled in every way—conflicts on the outside, fears on the inside. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us with the arrival of Titus, and not only with his arrival, but also with the comfort he had received concerning you. He told us about your longing, your sorrow, and your serious concern for me. As a result, I rejoiced even more.

God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in times of trouble.

That is why we are not afraid

even when the earth quakes

or the mountains topple into the depths of the sea.

Water roars and foams,

and mountains shake at the surging waves.

There is a river

whose streams bring joy to the city of God,

the holy place where the Most High lives.

God is in that city.

It cannot fall.

Those waters, the rivers and streams, remind us of our baptism. Remember, and find the joy.

Restore the joy of your salvation to me,

and provide me with a spirit of willing obedience.

Remembering our baptism, our salvation, we find the joy in service to our neighbor:

“Serve one another through love. In fact, the whole law is summed up in this one statement: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

From <https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians%205%3A12%2D14&version=EHV>

Let all who take refuge in you be glad.

Let them sing for joy forever.

You cover them with protection,

so those who love your name rejoice in you.

Yes, you bless the righteous, Lord.

You surround them with your favor as a shield.

In my search for joy, I will echo David in Psalm 63:

I sing for joy under the shade of your wings.

My soul clings to you.

Your right hand upholds me.
